Anthony Ramos (born Anthony Ramos Martinez; November 1, 1991) is an American actor. In 2015, he originated the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton's eldest son, in the Broadway musical Hamilton. Prior to that, he created the role of Justin Laboy in the Lin-Manuel Miranda short musical, 21 Chump Street.
Ramos is of Puerto Rican descent. He grew up in Bushwick, Brooklyn where he lived with his mother, older brother, and younger sister.
He went to Halsey Junior High School and was a member of a group called the Halsey Trio, in which he would sing Motown songs at assemblies. While attending New Utrecht High School, from which he graduated in 2009, he had the highest batting average on the school's baseball team and had planned to compete in college, with hopes of a career as a coach. However, he eventually lost his zeal for the sport and landed a lead role in the school's musical, believing he was auditioning for a talent show. He soon joined the school's theatre guild; with the guidance of two teachers, he decided to pursue a career in the performing arts.
Ramos was accepted into the musical theatre program at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy on a full scholarship. He graduated in spring 2011.
