Alma Mater Europaea – European Center Maribor (AMEU – ECM) is an academic community organised as a non-profit, non-government institution registered for executing higher education and research programs in the field of ecology (ecoremediations), reintegration (financial services, European business studies), intercultural symbiosis (institute for intercultural and Jewish studies in central Europe) as well as healthcare and social studies (healthcare, physical therapy, social gerontology).

AMEU – ECM is accredited as an institution of higher education, has a decree for enrollment into records of research organizations and accreditation for 18 higher education study programs. AMEU – ECM was formed by eight international research groups which filed for international research and development programs.

Key goals of AMEU – ECM which is, since the year 2011, also known as Alma Mater Europaea – European Center Maribor, include promotion of European studies in European countries which have not yet joined the European union but will do so shortly. With this intention AMEU – ECM has developed and acrredited high quality education programmes and established cooperation with professors from European countries of the Danube region while simultaneously encouraging cooperation between other educational institutions.

In 2007 European Academy of Sciences and Arts Salzburg (EASA) established Alma Mater Europaea as an academic institution that provides an organizational frame and contents for cultural and professional renewal of the Danube region. AMEU - ECM is part of Alma Mater Europaea as an academic and research institution, a network of over 250 academic teachers and over 40 academic institutions from 12 countries in the Danube region, also connecting 1400 excellent researchers, several Nobel prize recipients.

In 2011, EASA gave an institutional patronage to the European Centre Maribor, including it into the newly established university network Alma Mater Europaea, established particularly for the Danube region. A new project was placed in hands of AMEU - ECM under this patronage; namely organization of the Regional Interactive Educational Network (RIEN).
