Alcester is a city in Union County, South Dakota, United States. It is part of the Sioux City, IANE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 807 at the 2010 census.

Alcester was platted in 1879; early variant names were Linia and Irene. The present name honors Colonel Alcester of the British army. The weekly Alcester Union newspaper began publishing in 1888.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.33 square miles (0.85 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 807 people, 352 households, and 218 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,445.5 inhabitants per square mile (944.2/km2). There were 408 housing units at an average density of 1,236.4 per square mile (477.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.4% White, 0.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.

There were 352 households of which 25.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.1% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.72.
