Agápē is the second mixtape by American pop-R&B singer JoJo. It is of EP length, unlike the previous mixtape. The mixtape was announced in early November 2012. JoJo recorded material specifically intended for the mixtape as she did not want to keep her fans waiting for new music any longer. Released on her 22nd birthday on December 20, 2012, it marked the follow-up to her 2010 mixtape Can't Take That Away from Me, which spawned the single and video for "In the Dark". The mixtape's first single "We Get By" was released for free online on November 15, 2012 on JoJo's official Soundcloud with a limited number of downloads, with JoJo stating that "there's a limit on the download because we want you to download the entire mixtape once it's released". She recorded the song with a group of her friends known as The Backpackkids who all got together to create what they call "genre-less music".

Following the release of JoJo's debut mixtape "Can't Take That Away from Me" in September 2010, JoJo continued onward with production for third studio album, previously titled All I Want Is Everything (2008–2010) afterward being renamed to Jumping Trains in early 2011 and is now currently awaiting a new title. The album's official lead single "The Other Chick" was announced In early April 2011 and was eventually leaked in early May 2011. Recording for the album continued with "The Other Chick" in mind as the album's first single, however after JoJo had recorded a new song titled "Disaster" with producer Gino Barletta the label decided that the song would be a better fit as the album's first single and quickly turned "The Other Chick" into a buzz single and thus renaming "Disaster" as the albums new official lead single. Disaster was released on September 6, 2011, It debuted and peaked at number 87 on the billboard hot 100 singles chart and peaked at number 28 on the billboard top40 Pop songs chart. This was her first single to enter the chart since 2006's "Too Little Too Late". After JoJo was signed to be the new spokeswoman for Clearasil's newest product PerfectaWash a new song from the album entitled "Sexy to Me" was released as a promotional single on February 28, 2012 in support of the new clearasil commercial.

In June 2011, JoJo released a remix of Canadian rapper-singer Drake's R&B single "Marvin's Room". JoJo's version was met with critical acclaim and received over 40 million views on YouTube compared to just 8 million for the previous lead single for the album, "Disaster". In 2012, JoJo scrapped all of the album's previous titles and recording sessions to begin re-recording the entire album for the third time from scratch. During an interview with MTV News in July 2012, JoJo revealed she was halfway through re-recording the album. following the viral success of "Marvin's Room" JoJo announced that she was scrapping all of the older material in favour of a new grown up sound. JoJo premiered "Demonstrate", a song produced by Noah "40" Shebib as the album's new lead single. The song was met with a positive reception from critics and fans, drawing comparisons to the 2011 R&B chart topper "Motivation" by Kelly Rowland and Lil Wayne.
