Afghan identity card

The Afghan identity card (Tazkira) is a national identity document issued to citizens of Afghanistan. It is proof of identity, citizenship and residence.Identity documents and passports have been issued in Afghanistan since at least 1880, during the reign of Abdur Rahman Khan.

One of the main factors behind the worst security situation since late 2001 has been the lack of ID cards in Afghanistan. Local and foreign-born militants freely traveled to conduct attacks in any part of the country. It was reported in May 2017 that Afghanistan will start issuing e-ID cards (e-Tazkiras) in August 2017. The distribution of the e-ID cards was delayed since 2014. Had this been done in 2002, when Pakistan began documenting its citizens, there would likely have been a much better security situation in Afghanistan. By nature, people in possession of national ID cards are less likely to commit crimes.

The e-ID card is the size of a credit card. The front contains the bearer's face the following fields written in Pashto.
