The Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research or AcSIR is an Indian institute of national importance, headquartered at the CSIR Campus, Taramani, Chennai. The institute was established for the purpose of granting doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. The establishment of the AcSIR allows for a centralised institution to manage this research. Creation of the AcSIR was enabled by legislation of the Lok Sabha in 2010. This same legislation labelled the Academy as an "Institute of National Importance".

Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) was established in 2010 by a resolution of the Government of India on June 17, 2010 and the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research Act, 2011 notified on April 3, 2012, as an 'Institution of National Importance', with an aim of furtherance of advancement of learning and research in the field of Science & Technology and their interfaces in association with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India.

It is a meta-university with study centres in 37 laboratories and 6 units of CSIR, spread across 23 cities of India.

National Research Professor R. A. Mashelkar was appointed as first Chairperson of AcSIR, making him first formal head after Samir K. Brahmachari, former Acting Chairperson of interim AcSIR and Director General, CSIR and now Vice-Chairperson, AcSIR.

Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology, GoI has recognised AcSIR as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO).

Established in 2011 as an ‘Institution of National Importance’ (interim operations started in June, 2010), the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) will impart instruction and provide research opportunities in areas that are not routinely taught in academic universities in India.

The Academy has about 2200 full-time faculty members from CSIR Laboratories, over 2000 students enrolled in programmes and 7 non-academic staff members.
