The 57th general election in the United Kingdom is scheduled to be held on Thursday 5 May 2022, in line with the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011. The election may be held at an earlier date in the event of a early election motion being passed by a super-majority of two-thirds in the House of Commons, a vote of no confidence in the government or other exceptional circumstances. It will elect the 58th Parliament of the United Kingdom since the 1801 co-option of the Parliaments of Great Britain and Ireland. It is scheduled to be the first general election since 1970 to be held with the United Kingdom outside the European Union under the proposed exit timetable.

Each parliamentary constituency of the United Kingdom elects one MP to the House of Commons using the "first past the post" system. The leader of the party or coalition of parties that can command the confidence of a majority of MPs will be invited my the Monarch to form a government and become the Prime Minister. If the election results in no single party having a majority, then there is a hung parliament. In this case, the options for forming the Government are either a minority government or a coalition government.
