Among the tenants is Abbie (Greta Gerwig), an aspiring photographer going through cervical cancer, and William (Billy Crudup), a carpenter. Jamie's best friend and object of his affection, Julie (Elle Fanning) is also a constant presence in the house and often spends the night without Dorothea's knowledge.
Dorothea is concerned that she is no longer able to connect with her son. She asks Julie and Abbie to help raise him, stating that he will listen to them since he already has a good relationship with the two. Jamie later learns about his mother's plan and is embarrassed. In retaliation, he runs away from home. William lets Dorothea know that Jamie called him to let him know that he was in Los Angeles at a rock concert with friends and that he would be home later that evening.
