In 2016 Shelbourne F.C. are competing in the League of Ireland First Division for the third successive season following two failed attempts at promotion having finished fourth in the previous season. This season is currently commencing. Kevin Doherty continued on as manager for the second consecutive season. The squad had been significantly renewed over the previous season after many transfers were brought in. Doherty stepped down on mutual grounds with the club in June before former Shelbourne captain Owen Heary took over as the new manager.
