The men's 4 × 100 metres relay at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Beijing National Stadium on 29 August.
On paper this looked like Jamaica's advantage and just to be prepared, Jamaica ran Rasheed Dwyer to rest their star Usain Bolt in the heats. The United States employed a rare strategy of not resting anybody, even though Remontay McClain and Isiah Young were signed up, they used their A team in the heats.
In those heats, USA won the first heat Britain were second while resting Chijindu Ujah. In the second heat, Jamaica cruised to a fast 37.41 with a very efficient Chinese home team clearly handing to the anchor leg in second place in the process of setting the Asian Continental Record. France's Jimmy Vicaut came from behind to pass China, the entire heat fast enough to allow Antigua and Barbuda, and Canada to advance.
With a rested Bolt waiting on the anchor, anybody else, most notably the United States, would need to have a huge lead going in to the final leg. USA was in good position to do that making a clean handoff the first two times between Trayvon Bromell, Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay, while Jamaica was stiff between Nesta Carter and Asafa Powell. Around the final turn, Nickel Ashmeade made up ground on Gay, Bolt the first to start moving. The final baton change between Mike Rodgers and Tyson Gay was completed outside the changeover zone and the USA team was disqualified. Jamaica won, China second and Canada third. Britain did not finish after failing to complete the final baton change.
Prior to the competition, the records were as follows:
