The 2011–12 Iraqi Premier League will be the 38th season of the Iraqi Premier League since its establishment in 1974. The season began on 29 October 2011. Al Zawraa are the defending champions, having won their 12th league title the previous season.
A total of 20 teams are contesting the league, sixteen returning from the 2010–11 season and four promoted from the Iraq Division 1.
Twelve teams were relegated to the Iraq Division 1 after finishing in the bottom six spots, of the North Group and the South Group at the end of the 2010–11 season. Since 2003 the league has been divided in groups, this season there will be a traditional league format containing 20 clubs. From the 28 teams contested in the 2010–11 season 16 teams will remain in the league while the other twelve teams were relegated. And four teams from the Iraq Division 1 were promoted to the Iraqi Premier League.
The teams that were promoted from the First Division are Al-Hedood, Al-Shirqat, Al-Taji and Kirkuk FC
