The 1996 Sacramento State Hornets football team represented Sacramento State University during the 1996 NCAA Division I-AA football season.

Sacramento State competed for the first time in the Big Sky Conference. They had been a member of the American West Conference (AWC) from 1993–1995. The Hornets were led by second-year head coach John Volek and played home games at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. The Big Sky Conference was a step up for the Hornets and it was reflected in the season results. They finished with a record of one win and ten losses (1–10, 0–7 Big Sky). Sacramento State was outscored by its opponents 248–466 for the season.
