Pat Cash was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Boris Becker, the champion of the previous two years.

Stefan Edberg defeated Becker 4–6, 7–6, 6–4, 6–2 in the final to win the Gentlemen's Singles tennis title at the 1988 Wimbledon Championships. The final was completed on Monday 4 July since rain had continually stopped play on the Sunday.

World No. 2 Mats Wilander could become the first man to win Grand Slams on hard court, clay and grass in the same calendar year and attempted to become the first player to win Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon since Rod Laver in 1969. He lost to Miloslav Mečíř in the quarterfinal.

John McEnroe competed for the first time since 1985. He lost in the second round to Wally Masur. The tournament also featured the first appearance of future champion Goran Ivanisevic.

The seeded players are listed below. Stefan Edberg is the champion; others show the round in which they were eliminated.
