Defending champion Jimmy Connors was the No. 1 seed, but was upset in the fourth round by 12th seeded Kevin Curren.

This was also the first Grand Slam that featured future World No. 1 and six-time major champion Stefan Edberg in the main draw.

The seeded players are listed below. John McEnroe is the champion; others show the round in which they were eliminated.

Mayer and Arias were replaced in the draw by a Lucky Loser Bruce Kleege (USA), and by a qualifier Scott Davis (USA) respectively.
