The 1971 Sonoma State Cossacks football team represented Sonoma State during the 1971 College Division football season. Sonoma State competed in the Far Western Conference (FWC) for the first time, after having played as an independent the previous two seasons.
The 1971 Cossacks were led by second-year head coach Carl Peterson. They played home games at Cossacks Stadium in Rohnert Park, California. Sonoma State finished the season with a record of two wins and eight losses (2–8, 0–6 FWC). The Cossacks were outscored by their opponents 153–277 for the season. This was the last season for the Cossacks with Coach Peterson at the helm. He finished his two years at Sonoma State with a record of 6–12–1, a .342 winning percentage.
In April 1972 it was announced that Sonoma State would no longer field a football team due to financial issues. They did not have another team until a club team was started in 1979.
No Sonoma State players were selected in the 1972 NFL Draft.
