Arthur Ashe was the defending champion but lost in the semi-finals to Rod Laver, who went on to defeat countryman Tony Roche 7–9, 6–1, 6–2, 6–2 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1969 US Open, becoming the only man in the open era to complete the Calendar Grand Slam.
