The 1940 Cincinnati Reds season was a season in American baseball. The season saw the Reds attempting to improve on their previous output of 97-57, in which they appeared in the World Series, only to get swept by the powerful Yankees. Not only did they improve on their previous record, and appear in the World Series for the second straight time, but they also won 100 games for the first time in franchise history. The team went 100-53 during the season, best in the MLB. The team finished first in the National League with a record of 100–53, winning the pennant by 12 games over the Brooklyn Dodgers. They went on to face the Detroit Tigers in the 1940 World Series, beating them in seven games.
