The 1936 24 Hours of Le Mans was originally planned to be the 14th Grand Prix of Endurance held on 14 and 15 June, but was cancelled because workers were going on strike due to the Great Depression in France. A lack of workers to modify the streets for race use as well as officials to run the event meant that it had to be called off.

A total of 33 entries had been filed prior to the cancellation of the race, including the factory-backed squads from Delage, Aston Martin, Talbot, Delahaye, and Simca-Gordini.
