It is the southern terminal station of the Kōnan Railway Ōwani Line and is 435.3 rail kilometers from the southern terminus of the Ōu Main Line at Fukushima Station.
The JR Ōwani-Onsen Station was opened on October 21, 1898 as Ōwani Station (大鰐駅 Ōwani-eki?) on the Japanese government railways, the predecessor to the Japan National Railways (JNR). An overpass connecting the platforms was completed in 1915, and the station building in 1921. With the privatization of the JNR on April 1, 1987, it came under the operational control of JR East. On March 16, 1991, it was renamed to its present name.
