Fast food advertising


Along with automobiles, insurance, retail outlets, and consumer electronics, fast food is among the most heavily advertised sectors of the United States economy; spending over 4.6 billion dollars on advertising in 2012. A 2013 Ad Age compilation of the 25 largest U.S. advertisers ranked McDonald's as the fourth-largest advertiser (spending US$957,000,000 on measurable advertisements in 2012) and Subway as the nineteenth largest (US$516,000,000).

Fast food advertising campaigns have changed their intent over time. After hearing years of criticism of fast food diet's harmful effects, many modern campaigns stress the availability of healthy options. The rise in awareness of proper nutrition and obesity has decreased the income of these establishments, and their marketing campaigns attempt to rectify this. Even with Fast food companies, "change," in healthy meals and ingredients, many of the goods that are claimed and served are not what exclaimed when advertised.

Fast food restaurants often aim some of their advertising directly at the youth population.McDonald's Happy Meals, which include a toy often tied in with a newly released family film, is a significant example. Ronald McDonald, a clown advertising mascot introduced in 1963 and designed to appeal to young children, is another. In addition, in 1987 McDonald's incorporated a Play Place in their restaurants to further advertise to children,making their restaurants a more appealing environment for children. Additionally, from 1996 to 2006, Disney was an exclusive partner with McDonald's, linking their products together. They announced the end of this deal in May 2006, with some reports saying that Disney was worried about childhood obesity. Other than Disney, McDonald's has also been partnered with Nintendo since 1985, when the Nintendo Entertainment System was first introduced. In 1987, McDonald's also created a Nintendo play land in their restaurants where kids could play on Nintendo consoles while waiting for their food. During 2007, McDonald's began to provide WiFi from the Nintendo consoles; giving children the ability to play where ever they were. With also a target audience of children releasing these new films and incorporating toys, it uses the kids to reach out to their parents pockets because of their large investments in their children lives.

Bake and Shark


Bake and Shark is a traditional fast food dish of Trinidadian cuisine.

Bake and Shark is a classic street food dish that is sold at a multitude of food stalls and cookshops all over Trinidad and Tobago. It consists of a fried flatbread ("bake") filled with fried pieces of shark meat and various other ingredients and sauces. Before frying, the shark meat is either seasoned with a herb blend and breaded, or marinated in a mix of lemon juice, onion, garlic, thyme and capsicum chinense. Popular additional ingredients are lettuce, coleslaw, tomatoes and/or pineapple; liquid condiments commonly used are mustard, ketchup, garlic sauce, chili sauce and/or a sauce made from culantro. In Trinidad, bake and shark is widely associated with Maracas beach on the Northern coast as it features a multitude of bake and shark stands, and the needed shark is caught in the offshore surf.

As apex predators, sharks are of high importance for the ocean as an eco system. Through overfishing, many shark species are endangered. Apart from ethical problems this also causes economical problems as the demand for shark meat in Trinidad cannot be covered any more. Often catfish and ray are used as substitutes and are declared incorrectly. In return, bake and shark stalls sometimes advertise for using shark meat instead of cheaper alternatives.

Berenklauw


A berenklauw (Bear's claw in English) or spoetnik (Sputnik in English) is a deep-fried fast food snack from the Netherlands. It consists of a sliced meatball and fried onion rings on a wooden skewer, smothered in peanut sauce (also known as satay sauce) which originated in the Indonesian cuisine. The snack is also served with "Zigeunersaus" (literally translated: Gypsy-sauce), should one not like satay sauce. Sometimes, pineapple or bell pepper are used as well as onion rings.

Bosna (sausage)

Bosna (sometimes Bosner) is a spicy Austrian fast food dish, said to have originated in either Salzburg or Linz. It is now popular all over western Austria and southern Bavaria.

It resembles a hot dog, consisting mainly of a Bratwurst sausage, onions and a blend of mustard and/or tomato ketchup and curry powder. Bosna is made with white bread and is usually grilled briefly before serving.

Cart noodle is a kind of à la carte noodle which became popular in Hong Kong in the 1950s through independent street vendors operating on roadsides and in public housing estates in low-income districts, using carts. Many street vendors have vanished but the name and style of noodle endures as a cultural icon.

With many immigrants arriving from mainland China during the 1950s, hawkers would sell food out of a cart roaming the streets. Some vendors specialising in cooked noodles would sell them with an assortment of toppings and styles.

Historically, the cart frames were assembled out of wood with metallic basins. It allowed the heat inside to cook the ingredients. In the old days, it was possible to receive large quantities for a cheap price. The noodles were considered "cheap and nasty". Cost was generally low to appeal to the average citizens. It was known for its poor hygiene. As such, they were also commonly referred to as "filthy noodle" (嗱喳麵). Since hygiene standards rose, many street vendors (licensed or otherwise) have vanished.

The name and style of the noodle endures, and remain widely available in low- to mid-end eateries. The price may vary depending on the combination of ingredients, or type of establishments. On the contrary, because the noodle is now defined by its retro style, it can sometimes be found in higher-end establishments. It may offer costlier types of ingredients at a higher price.

A cha chaan teng (literally: tea restaurant) is commonly found in Hong Kong, Macau and parts of Guangdong. They are known for eclectic and affordable menus, which include dishes from Hong Kong cuisine and Hong Kong-style Western cuisine. Since the mass migration of Hong Kong people in the 1980s they are also commonplace in many Western countries like Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, particularly in the Chinatown areas of many major cities.

In early Hong Kong, only high-class restaurants provided Western food and most of them did not serve local people. At that time, people saw western food as a luxury item. After the Second World War, Hong Kong culture was influenced by British culture. Hong Kong people started to like drinking tea and eating cakes. Therefore, some of the Hong Kong people set up the cha chaan teng and their target audience was local people. Providing different kinds of Canto-Western Cuisine and drinks with very low price led to them being regarded as "cheap western food", or "soy sauce western food" (si yau sai chaan, 豉油西餐).

In recent years, the management of cha chaan teng began to change in co-ordination with the development of Hong Kong economy and society. During the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, cha chaan tengs became much more popular in Hong Kong as they still provided the cheapest food for the public. In April 2007, one of the Hong Kong political officers suggested that cha chaan teng be listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, because of its important role in Hong Kong society.

The name, literally "tea restaurant", serves to distinguish the restaurants from Western restaurants that provide water to customers instead of tea. Cha chaan teng establishments provide tea (usually weak tea) called "clear tea" (清茶 cing1 caa4), to customers as soon as they are seated. (Some patrons use this hot tea to wash their utensils, a common custom in Hong Kong.) The "tea" in the name refers to this inexpensive black tea, which differs from the traditional Chinese tea served in traditional dim sum restaurants and teahouses (茶樓 caa4 lau4).

Cheese fries are a fast food dish consisting of french fries covered in cheese. They are known as cheesy chips or chips and cheese in the United Kingdom

Throughout the Southwest US, cheese fries are often covered in melted cheddar cheese, bacon bits, jalapeño slices, and chives and served with ranch dressing. Alternately, they are also served as carne asada fries. In Philadelphia, pizza fries are topped with melted mozzarella and served with pizza sauce on the side, while "Mega Fries" are topped with Cheddar (or sometimes Cheez Whiz) and mozzarella cheese and bacon. Usually served with a side of ranch dressing. In New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey they are covered with American, Mozzarella, or Swiss cheese, then melted. In New Jersey and certain New York City diners, Disco Fries are fries served with Mozzarella and brown gravy. In other parts of the US, nacho cheese is often used, especially in snack-stand type settings.

Chili cheese fries are cheese fries topped with Chili con carne. The cheese is usually either American or Cheddar. In Cincinnati, Ohio, they use their own Cincinnati chili for their Chili cheese fries at the local chili restaurants. In New Mexico, they use New Mexican Chile for their chili cheese fries, often adding chopped lettuce, tomato, and olives as garnish.

In Ireland a variation called "Taco Fries" consists of fresh cut chips covered in sub sauce and shredded cheddar. Piled on top of the cheese are ground beef, tomato, peppers, onions, and various seasonings. In Bulgaria, a common side dish offered in most restaurants consists of French fries, topped with grated or crumbled sirene. In the Netherlands a dish named 'kapsalon' is served as fast food. This consist of fries covered with cheese, salad and shawarma or doner kebab. It is often consumed with large amounts of garlic sauce or chili sauce. In the United Kingdom chips and cheese are often served in pubs. Preparation includes the pouring of cheddar sauce over chips or sprinkling cheddar over chips and then putting the dish under a grill.
