Off the Grid (food organization)

Off the Grid is a mobile food truck festival in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, USA.

Off the Grid travels to different locations and serves a variety of food. Similar to a night market or a bazaar, a group of vendors gather in an outdoor space on certain days of the week. Originally based in San Francisco, California, Off the Grid now extends its markets throughout the Bay Area.

Off the Grid is owned and operated by Matt Cohen, who got the idea of a mobile food feast while teaching in Japan. There he saw street vendors drive around and serve food cooked from fire pits in the back of their motor vehicles. Off the Grid’s first event was on June 25, 2010 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. It had live music, alcohol, and vendors serving Latin and Asian food. In 2010 a total of three markets were opened. In 2011 Off the Grid opened nine more, and today there are 15 total markets that run weekly. 100 different vendors participate in Off the Grid.

Off the Grid offers a variety of food at each market, and it changes the combination of vendors so that each event is unique. It also tries to help local businesses by charging the vendors a fixed cost that is lower than other standard rates for events and spaces. Off the Grid does, however, frustrate immobile businesses and restaurants that must compete when the food trucks park outside their business. One restaurant owner has reported a daily revenue loss of 30-40% when the trucks are nearby at one of Off the Grid's 15 weekly locations.

The vendors that take part in the Off the Grid markets have come to serve a broad range of international foods, which include but are not limited to, American, South American, Taiwanese, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, and Mediterranean. Due to its increase in popularity and demand, Off the Grid is now expanding its services to school campuses special events or parties.

Organic Consumers Association

imageOrganic Consumers Association

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) is a non-profit advocacy group for organic agriculture based in Finland, Minnesota. It was formed in 1998 by members of the organic industry and consumers of organic products after the U.S. Department of Agriculture's controversial initial version of their proposed regulations for organic food. The organization's members include subscribers to their online newsletters, volunteers, supporters, and 3,000 retail outlets.

The OCA's "Organic Agenda" is to encourage the U.S. government to expand organic agriculture, utilize fair trade, eliminate genetically modified food, implement universal health care, and obtain energy independence through renewable energy. The organization hopes to "inspire" consumers to buy organic products, and to "pressure the USDA and organic companies to preserve strict organic standards."

Stop Wasting Food

Stop Wasting Food (Danish: Stop Spild af Mad) is a Danish consumer organization that works for the reduction of food waste in society. It was established in 2008 by Selina Juul, who acts as the movement's day-to-day leader and spokesperson. The organization is run by volunteers and does not count on a permanent membership.

The goal of Stop Wasting Food is to spread the message that it is economically irresponsible to dispose of edible food at any point in the food-production chain, from producers to shops and restaurants to homes. The Danish Agriculture and Food Council has estimated that Denmark wastes over 700,000 tons of food annually, at a cost of DKK 11.6 billion.

Stop Wasting Food, and its spokesperson Selina Juul, has received support from Danish politicians such as Eva Kjer Hansen, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Ritt Bjerregaard, Connie Hedegaard, Bertel Haarder, Frank Jensen, Dan Jørgensen, Karen Ellemann, Henrik Høegh and Kirsten Brosbøl, as well as food industry figures such as Rema 1000 and Coop Danmark.

In part due to the Stop Wasting Food movement, Denmark was able to reduce its food waste by 25% in the five-year period of 2010–2015.

The Good Food Institute

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes plant-based meat, dairy, and egg substitutes, as well as clean meat (also known as cultured meat) alternatives to the products of conventional animal agriculture. The organization launched in February 2016 with the vision of creating a healthy, humane, and sustainable food supply. GFI targets scientists, policymakers, and entrepreneurs to promote plant-based products and cellular agriculture.

The group has conducted activities in Washington D.C., which include filing lawsuits against the FDA and the USDA. Other campaigns, such as their petition to get In-N-Out to add a veggie burger, have garnered significant press attention, including a backlash from In-N-Out customers. The LA Times published an op-ed by the group's communication manager, "Will adding a veggie burger to the In-N-Out menu destroy the country?" that responded to the controversy.

GFI’s promotion of plant-based and "clean meat" has been featured on various news outlets including the Washington Post Magazine and VICE. According to Co-Founder and Executive Director Bruce Friedrich, “it’s likely that, in a few generations, animal slaughter for food will be extremely rare in the developed world.”

Among GFI's 25 advisors are entrepreneurs, food industry experts, CEOs, scientists, authors, and financial advisors, including:

In June 2016, GFI filed a lawsuit in a D.C. federal court demanding that the FDA turn over all records related to its regulation of the term "soy milk," after the agency failed to respond to several Freedom of Information Act requests GFI submitted in April 2016. According to Politico's Morning Agriculture report, GFI wants the FDA to formally "allow the use of the term 'soy milk,' and says the agency's inconsistency on the matter has led to 'consumer confusion and an uneven competitive landscape.'"

After filing three Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain documents from the USDA related to its open investigation of the American Egg Board's allegedly anti-competitive actions against egg-free Mayo company, Hampton Creek, GFI sued the agency on Monday, August 8, 2016, for failing to respond to the requests in full. According to an article on Vice Motherboard, GFI filed FOIA requests in December for meeting minutes and budgetary documents from the Egg Board, but was only given access to documents that had already been made public.

The Real Junk Food Project

The Real Junk Food Project (TRJFP) is an organisation that uses food that would otherwise have been disgarded from supermarkets, restaurants, and other independent food suppliers to produce meals that are sold on a "pay as you feel" basis. These meals are produced in different "pay as you feel" cafes around the UK.

TRJFP raises awareness of the amount of food waste in the food system. It directly responds to this problem through using waste food in its cafes and other food outlets. Through using a "pay as you feel" scheme, it also aims to make the food accessible to everyone.

The first PAYF cafe was started in Armley, Leeds, in December 2013 by Sam Joseph, Conor Walsh and Adam Smith. Since its opening, this cafe has fed over 10,000 people using over 20 tonnes of unwanted food.

The Real Junk Food Project cafes has a network of cafes that use the discarded (out of date but still edible) food to sell to patrons who support the initiative by the 'pay as you feel' method. The network of cafes is supported through all region of the UK as well as international projects cafes with new projects starting regurlarly.

This project utilises many volunteers and their skill sets to keep costs down and network with other organisations.

During an inspection of the Leeds's warehouse, the West Yorkshire Trading Standards found 444 items out-of-date. The project is now at risk of prosecution for infringing the Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations while serving produce past their expiration date. Adam Smith argues that one million people have been fed by the project without anyone being sick so far. As a response to the matter, Feedback, another UK organisation rescuing food waste, expressed their support to the Real Junk Food Project by stating that "the real crime here is the waste that is caused when people throw perfectly edible food away".

US Food Sovereignty Alliance

The United States Food Sovereignty Alliance is a group of food producers and labor, environmental, faith-based, social justice and anti-hunger advocacy organizations, including the Applied Research Center, Family Farm Defenders, the Indigenous Environmental Network, and the National Family Farm Coalition. The USFA advocates food sovereignty, which is the right to sufficient and culturally appropriate food to all people and communities, and aims to reestablish better relations between food producers and consumers, placing the needs of local farmers, fishers, indigenous peoples and landless workers most impacted by global hunger, poverty, and unbalanced food distribution above agribusiness and larger corporations. The USFA is organized into four Alliance Teams: Land & Resource Grabs, Immigrant Rights & Trade, Defense of Mother Earth, and Racism & Leadership.

The US Food Sovereignty Alliance is a member of the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty, and the Right to Food and Nutrition Watch Consortium, which includes “Brot für die Welt” (Bread for the world), FoodFirst Information and Action Network (FIAN), and Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation (ICCO), among others. The Alliance awards the Food Sovereignty Prize annually.

The USFSA's mission, according to their founding document, is as follows:

"The US Food Sovereignty Alliance works to end poverty, rebuild local food economies, and assert democratic control over the food system. We believe all people have the right to healthy, culturally appropriate food, produced in an ecologically sound manner. As a US-based alliance of food justice, anti-hunger, labor, environmental, faith-based, and food producer groups, we uphold the right to food as a basic human right and work to connect our local and national struggles to the international movement for food sovereignty."

The US Food Sovereignty Alliance was officially founded in 2009. The Alliance supports the concept of food sovereignty under the definition provided by La Vía Campesina (LVC), which originally proposed the idea at the 1996 World Food Summit. A group of activists and supporters came together to form the Working Group on the Food Crisis in 2008, a previous version of the Alliance, to address issues such as increasing food prices, global hunger, unequal food distribution and food insecurity. Part of this group were representatives from the National Family Farm Coalition, and members of the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development. After a meeting in Washington, DC in 2009, the Alliance was established to mobilize and educate US and international activists on the food crisis. The Alliance met at the United States Social Forum in 2010, and has been meeting annually ever since.
