TechMission

imageTechMission

TechMission is a Christian non-profit organization located in Dorchester, Massachusetts which aims to use technology to transform vulnerable communities. Its main goals include bridging the digital divide, protecting youth and families from online pornography, matching Christian volunteers with organizations that need them, and training urban ministry workers in ministry management and development through online courses at City Vision College.

To serve these ends, in 2012, TechMission:

• Matched 9,995 volunteers through ChristianVolunteering.org & programs

• Funded 65 full-time interns for ministries serving 3,642 at-risk youth through TechMission Corps

• Served over 1.3 million unique visitors to UrbanMinistry.org & other websites

• Provided accredited college courses with 281 student registrations through City Vision College

• Provided $10.3 million in resources to sites only spending $1.5 million (674% return on investment) i

TechMission was founded in 2000 as an extension of the ministry of the PREP Computer Center, which was a Dorchester-based computer center run as a partnership between Bruce Wall Ministries and two local churches. Andrew Sears, who was at that time executive director of PREP, and other leaders of Christian community computer centers saw the need for a non-profit which would provide resources to and foster communication between their programs. This was the origin of TechMission's AC4 program (the Association of Christian Community Computer Centers), which now serves over 500 sites, including sites affiliated with the Salvation Army, Christian Community Development Association, and the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions.

TechMission became a separate non-profit entity in 2002. The next year, following the success of the AC4 program, it launched the TechMission Boston Program which provides full-time workers to serve in after-school, teen, and adult technology education programs, as well as providing the curriculum and software benefits of AC4 membership. In 2004, TechMission Boston received AmeriCorps backing which enabled it to expand to Los Angeles. The program, called TechMission Corps, sent out interns to organizations in Boston, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, and Western Massachusetts.

In 2005, a Department of Justice grant enabled TechMission to start its Safe Families Program, which promotes online safety through providing free training and web-filtering software. The TechMission Volunteer Network (www.christianvolunteering.org) was launched the following year. In 2007, TechMission introduced UrbanMinistry.org, which is an effort to use Web 2.0 technologies to further promote collaboration and resource-sharing between Christian community development ministries. Finally, at the beginning of 2008, TechMission acquired City Vision College, It was founded in 1998 by the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions as "Rescue College." City Vision College is an accredited online institution designed to equip urban ministry workers to manage and develop their ministries Three certificate and degree completion programs are available: Missions, Nonprofit Management and Addiction Studies. In 2013, TechMission Corps was renamed City Vision Internships to expand the program beyond AmeriCorps funding.

Two Circles

TwoCircles.net (informally TCN) is a non-profit online news delivering organization registered in the state of Massachusetts. It targets news about Indian Muslims, Indian politics and Muslims around the world. Its editor is Kashif-ul-Huda. TCN attracts about 10,000 unique visitors daily which includes politicians, policy planners, journalists of major newspapers and television channels. It gets quoted often by the mainstream media like The Hindu, The Sunday Guardian,The Hindustan Times etc.

In June 2010, TCN's news editor spotted a picture he had taken of Muslim students in Azamgarh, UP, which the BJP was attempting to pass off in an ad campaign as an image of progressive Muslims in Gujarat. He alerted the mainstream media, and the BJP was roundly panned.

In the same year in response to the website's comprehensive performance report of Muslim MPs, one of the MPs called the TCN office to inform them that they had missed two questions he had asked in the Parliament. Shaik Amer Arafath is one of its Columnists.

VolunteerMatch

imageVolunteerMatch

Impact Online, also known as VolunteerMatch, is an American nonprofit organization best known for its web services, which aim to strengthen communities by making it easier for people to find good causes. The organization also partners with businesses to provide tools and services to help companies, brands, campuses and government manage volunteer programs and support corporate social responsibility initiatives. VolunteerMatch works with clients in different industries, and since its launch in 1998 it has won several awards.

VolunteerMatch is free to use by individuals. Nonprofit organizations may elect a free basic account; a premium account called Community Leader; or Preferred Partnership which includes a bundle of enterprise tools for regional and national nonprofit organizations with multiple chapters. Products and services for companies, schools, and multi-chapter nonprofits are administered under its VolunteerMatch Solutions sub-brand.

On September 7, 2009 VolunteerMatch introduced a live map that displays search activity in its network in real-time, and on March 15, 2010 it launched VolunteerMatch for iPhone. Also in 2010 it updated its free Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for non-commercial use to increase accessibility to their volunteer network. In June 2011, VolunteerMatch Solutions introduced pure consulting services to help businesses and organizations launch or grow volunteer engagement programs.

On April 24, 2015, VolunteerMatch collected its 100,000th nonprofit partner.

Inspired by the potential of the web and the success of NetDay, VolunteerMatch.org was launched on April 20, 1998 as a merger between Impact Online, Inc. (a California nonprofit organization started by MBAs Mark Benning, Joanne Ernst, Steve Glikbarg, and Cindy Shove) and Volunteer America (a project co-founded by Jay Backstrand and Craig Jacoby). Today the organization is called Impact Online, Inc., dba VolunteerMatch. Its early growth was helped by attention from the mainstream media (particularly around the topic of virtual volunteering) and its success in competitions sponsored by industry and academic institutions. In 1998, it was a final selection for inclusion in the Smithsonian Institution Permanent Research Collection and was featured in an article in USA Today. In 1999 it was promoted by Oprah Winfrey on her show.

Why U

imageWhy U

Why U, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization funded by the Goldman Charitable Foundation. Why U is dedicated to exploration through the use of digital media, of new education paradigms for the STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Why U’s goal is to remove barriers to learning in the STEM subjects, and increase the public’s depth of knowledge of STEM.

Why U develops and provides worldwide access to free animated videos which teach fundamental concepts in math and science in an entertaining format. Why U animated videos are designed to develop conceptual knowledge rather than procedural skill, i.e., instill in the viewer an understanding of the underlying concepts of math and science rather than promoting the memorization of problem solving procedures. The prime focus is to clearly and efficiently explain the conceptual framework at the heart of mathematical and scientific subjects in a way which engages the viewer and holds their interest. Concepts are presented in the context of a dramatic and humorous setting using animated graphics designed to communicate complex ideas in an enjoyable and exciting way. As such, Why U videos are often used as collateral material in formal learning environments around the world.

Why U animated videos may be viewed in closed caption in many languages on its website http://www.whyu.org or on the MyWhyU YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/MyWhyU. In addition, Why U videos have been translated into many languages, and are presented and re-distributed by educational organizations around the world. To provide accessibility in environments or areas of the world which have limited internet access, all Why U videos are also available for free download on its website http://www.whyu.org.

In recent years, there has been a shift in emphasis by educators from procedural to conceptual knowledge. One benefit of a strong conceptual understanding is that a person is less likely to forget concepts than procedures. “If conceptual understanding is gained, then a person can reconstruct a procedure that may have been forgotten. On the other hand, if procedural knowledge is the limit of a person's learning, there is no way to reconstruct a forgotten procedure. Conceptual understanding in mathematics, along with procedural skill, is much more powerful than procedural skill alone.” “Research has shown that students in a conceptually oriented mathematics class outperform students in a procedurally oriented mathematics class on tests and on measures of attitude toward mathematics. (See, for example, Boaler, 1998; Cain, 2002; Fuson et al., 2000; Masden and Lanier, 1992.)”
