Nu-Way Weiners


Nu-Way Weiners, Inc. is a company that operates a chain of fast food restaurants that started in Macon, Georgia, United States. Nu-Way is known for hot dogs (or wieners, not the misspelled "weiners") – unique for their red color. Nu-Way also serves other breakfast and lunch items, including pancakes, grits, sandwiches, and hamburgers. As of 2016, 10 Nu-Way Weiner restaurants operate in the central Georgia area, although the main location on Cotton Avenue in downtown Macon is temporarily closed to a fire in 2015. Nu-Way's slogan is "I'd Go a Long Way For a Nu-Way" and is a registered trademark of Nu-Way Weiners, Inc.

In 1916, Greek American James Mallis opened a hot dog stand in Macon named “Nu-Way Weiners.” Established the same year as Nathan's Famous hot dog stand in New York City, Nu-Way is one of the oldest hot dog restaurants in the United States.

By 1968, three Nu-Way Weiner restaurants existed, which expanded to nine locations by 1972. Nu-Way developed a clientele with a taste for its hot dogs with chili ("chili dogs") and hot dogs with cole slaw ("slaw dogs"). Because of that combination, The New York Times declared Nu-Way to be the "king" of the slaw dog "hill". A quarter-pound hamburger, called the Mega-Burger, was also added to the menu.

During the morning hours of March 13, 2015, the original Cotton Avenue location was destroyed by fire. Fortunately, the iconic neon sign was saved from the blaze. The owners have indicated the restaurant will be rebuilt.

Food critics have praised Nu-Way for its authentic Southern American cuisine and nostalgic atmosphere. In November 2007, Nu-Way received widespread media attention when Oprah Winfrey visited the restaurant while in Macon to tape the annual Oprah's Favorite Things episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. She claimed that Nu-Way was one of her favorite things about Macon.

Olneyville New York System


The Olneyville New York System is a restaurant in Providence, Rhode Island, known for its hot wieners. It opened in 1946 by Anthony Stavrianakos, a Greek immigrant. The restaurant was named for Providence's Olneyville neighborhood. Stavrianakos's extended family had operated the Original New York System from 1927 in the Smith Hill neighborhood. The restaurant's signature dish, hot wieners, are never referred to as hot dogs or served with ketchup. They are "distinctive to Rhode Island. Slathered with mustard, topped with meat sauce, sprinkled with celery salt and onions, and served in a steamed bun, the hot wiener is signature as are the salt and vinegar French fries. The preferred drink is coffee milk, made in Rhode Island by flavoring milk with a sweetened coffee concentrate called coffee syrup." Hot wieners with all available toppings are ordered "all the way."

Anthony Stavrianakos founded the restaurant in 1946 with his son Nicholas. Nicholas’ son Peter took over from him. Peter's son Greg and sister Stephanie are fourth generation owners. They currently operate two locations, in Providence and Cranston, Rhode Island.

Orange Julius

Orange Julius is an American chain of fruit drink beverage stores. It has been in business since the late 1920s. The eponymous beverage is a mixture of ice, orange juice, sweetener, milk, powdered egg whites and vanilla flavoring.

The drink grew out of an orange juice stand opened in Los Angeles in 1926 by Julius Freed. Sales were initially modest, about $20 a day (equivalent to approximately $271 in 2016 dollars). In 1929, Bill Hamlin, Freed's real estate broker, developed a mixture that made the acidic orange juice less bothersome to his stomach. Freed's stand began serving the drink, which had a frothier, creamier texture. The sales at the stand increased substantially after the introduction of the new drink, going up to $100 a day. People began lining up at the store and shouting, "Give me an Orange, Julius!" Eventually, the new drink would simply be called "the Orange Julius".

During the 1950s and 1960s, Orange Julius was sold at a variety of outlets, including state and county fairs and freestanding Orange Julius stands. The original stand also provided medicinal tonics and Bible tracts.

The Orange Julius was named the official drink of the 1964 New York World's Fair.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Orange Julius beverage stands used the image of a devil with a pitchfork, similar to that of the Arizona State University mascot, Sparky, around an orange, with the slogan, "A Devilish Good Drink". The company later dropped the logo and slogan after threats of a lawsuit from the ASU alumni association.

For a short period in the early 1970s, Orange Julius expanded into the UK and Dutch markets, with a fairly large restaurant in Golders Green, selling Julius Burgers as well as the classic orange drink, and a small outlet in the city centre of Amsterdam. However, this had gone by the mid-70s.

In 1987, the Orange Julius chain was bought by International Dairy Queen. IDQ, and by inclusion since 1999, Berkshire Hathaway, owns the rights to all Orange Julius stores, and has expanded the chain so its drinks are included in many of its Dairy Queen mall stores, called Treat Centers.

The Original Hamburger Stand


The Original Hamburger Stand is a regional fast food chain in the western United States. Besides its low-cost burgers, the franchise features menu items from its sister companies Wienerschnitzel and Tastee-Freez at some of its locations. The franchise has locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas, and Wyoming.

Its headquarters are located in Irvine, California.

The Original Hamburger Stand began when its parent company the Galardi Group attempted to compete in the hamburger market. The Galardi Group added hamburgers to its Wienerschnitzel menus in 1979, but with little success into the 1980s, the company started two new chains, The Original Hamburger Stand and Weldon's gourmet hamburgers. Poorly performing Wienerschnitzel locations were replaced with The Original Hamburger Stands in locations such as the Denver area.

Papaya King


Papaya King is a chain of fast food take-out restaurants based in New York City.

The original Papaya King was opened in 1932 on the corner of 86th St. and Third Ave. on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Although the restaurant originally only served drinks made from fresh tropical fruits, it soon expanded to serving hot dogs due to the influence of its neighborhood, which at the time was populated predominantly by German-American immigrants. It now also serves crispy curly fries, onion rings, fried pickles, fried Oreos, fried Twinkies, tater tots, knishes, cheese steaks and corn dogs.

Papaya King was founded and run for many years by the late Gus Poulos, and later by his son Peter, who first managed their second store (with seating) at 87th Street and Third Avenue. In the 1930s, there was also a store in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. During the 1970s, the Pouloses attempted to franchise the restaurant, and one franchise briefly opened in midtown. A company-owned store opened (and closed) in the 1980s at 59th Street and Third Avenue. In 2001, another company-owned store opened in Philadelphia, this time on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania at 40th and Locust Streets; it closed in 2004. In 2006, another attempted franchise opened briefly in the food court at Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island, in Garden City, New York. The Poulos family sold the business in the early 2000s.

In May, 2013 Papaya King opened a concept store on St. Marks Place – a historical and cultural crossroads in New York City’s East Village neighborhood. The store features a recessed patio area in front, widely referred to as “the stoop,” where customers and locals gather. The store features many of the classic elements that characterize the 86th Street location, with additional experience elements such as vintage arcade games, a projector screen, sound system and brand merchandise.
