Joan Kroc

imageExternal video

Joan Beverly Smith Kroc (née Mansfield; August 27, 1928 – October 12, 2003), also known as Joni, was the third wife of McDonald's CEO Ray Kroc. She was also known for her involvement in the McDonald's organization and for her philanthropy.

Joan was born on August 27, 1928, in West St. Paul, Minnesota. Her father, Charles Smart Mansfield, was a store keeper, later a railroad telegraph operator and salesman. Her mother, Gladys Bonnebelle Mansfield was born April 5, 1906 in Luck, Wisconsin to Herman Conrad Peterson and his wife Emma Bonnebelle. Joan's mother was an accomplished violinist. She studied music at the MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis and started teaching at age 15.

In 1945, she married Rawland F. Smith, a Navy veteran, who, eventually, became a McDonald's franchisee. The couple's only child, a daughter named Linda, was born the following year. She had four granddaughters, Allison, Amanda, Amy and Holly.

Joan met McDonald's Corp. founder Ray Kroc while playing organ at the Criterion Restaurant in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1957. Kroc said in his autobiography that he "was stunned by her blond beauty". They carried on a secret relationship until they both divorced their spouses and married in 1969. Following Kroc's death in 1984, she inherited his fortune.

Joan's first philanthropic endeavor was Operation Cork in 1976 in La Jolla. It aimed to inform doctors and other health workers about the dangers of alcoholism.

Ray and Joan Kroc owned the San Diego Padres professional baseball club. After Ray's death in 1984, she tried to donate the team to the city of San Diego (the San Diego Padres went on to win its first ever National League pennant that year), but Major League Baseball rules forbid public team ownership. Kroc sold the team in 1990 and turned her attention to philanthropy. She drew controversy when she alluded to paying star and future Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith to maintain her garden at a time when he was refused a raise by her team's general manager.

June Martino

June Martino (August 10, 1917 – January 29, 2005) was an American businesswoman who became Ray Kroc’s bookkeeper in 1948 and ultimately rose to Corporate Secretary, Treasurer, Director, and part-owner of McDonald’s Corporation.

Martino, a native of Chicago, was married to Louis Martino, who owned and operated an early McDonald’s restaurant in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, established the company’s original research facility in Addison, Illinois in 1961, and preceded June in death 10 years ago. The Martinos had two sons, John and Joel.

June Martino was the glue that held the early McDonald’s organization together. Her keen insight into people brought some of the company’s early talent into the fold, and she earned the unofficial title of “vice president of equilibrium” and the affectionate nickname, “Mother Martino.” June and Louis married shortly before World War II. When she took papers to the Army personnel office to exempt Louis from service because of his critically important work on coaxial cable for Western Electric, she found herself caught up by patriotism and joined the service herself.

As a WAC, June studied electronics at Northwestern University, learning trigonometry and calculus through extensive tutoring, since she had no special aptitude for higher math. During the war, she worked in the U.S. Army Signal Corps on tasks ranging from testing radar systems to trouble-shooting work on airplane radio systems.

Having moved their family to a farm in Wisconsin when their parents grew ill after the war, June returned to Chicago to look for work in 1948. That’s when she met Ray Kroc, who was looking for a bookkeeper to help handle his growing Multimixer milkshake machine business.

“She had a presence that conveyed integrity and a restless native ability to deal with problems,” Ray recalled in his book, Grinding It Out. “This was enveloped in a warm, compassionate personality, a rare combination of traits. The fact that she had no bookkeeping experience bothered me not at all. I knew she would master the technical routines quickly."

Richard and Maurice McDonald

Brothers Richard James "Dick" McDonald (February 16, 1909 – July 14, 1998) and Maurice James "Mac" McDonald (November 26, 1902 – December 11, 1971) were American restaurateurs and entrepreneurs who developed and opened the first McDonald's restaurant in 1940. Their innovative concept and execution of a fast food stand has been highly influential in American cuisine, serving as the foundation for a global enterprise.

The McDonald brothers' parents were immigrants from Ireland. Their father worked as a shift manager in a New Hampshire shoe factory. In the late 1920s, the brothers moved together to California.

In 1937, the McDonald brothers opened a hot dog stand (without hamburgers on the menu) in Arcadia, California, northeast of Los Angeles. It was a typical drive-in food stand of its era, where patrons waited in their cars while carhop waiters took and delivered orders.

In 1940, the brothers designed a purpose-built restaurant in San Bernardino, focused on hamburgers and french fries, on the corner of 1398 North E Street and West 14th Street in San Bernardino, California (34°07′32″N 117°17′41″W / 34.1255°N 117.2946°W / 34.1255; -117.2946). While this "McDonald's" was still premised on most customers arriving by car, its design was unique due to a combination of factors:

The new restaurant was a success, and with a goal of making $1 million before they turned 50 the McDonald brothers began franchising their system in 1953, beginning with a restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona operated by Neil Fox. At first they only franchised the system, rather than the name of their restaurant. Later, the brothers started franchising the entire concept, with restaurants built to a standard design, created by Fontana, California architect Stanley Clark Meston, and featuring Richard's suggestion of the paired Golden Arches, which formed an "M" when viewed from an angle.

Herb Peterson

Herbert Ralph "Herb" Peterson (January 5, 1919 – March 25, 2008) was an American fast food advertising executive and food scientist most known for being the inventor of the McDonald's Egg McMuffin in 1972. The breakfast business that he pioneered with this item had grown to an estimated $4–5 billion in annual revenues for the fast food restaurant chain McDonald's by 1993.

Born and raised in Chicago, Petersen, who served in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Major in three years during World War II, began his career with McDonald's as vice president at D'Arcy Advertising in Chicago, which was McDonald's in-house advertising arm, Peterson coined McDonald's first national advertising slogan, "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day."

He later became a franchise co-owner and the operator of six McDonald's restaurants in and around Santa Barbara, California.

Peterson developed the Egg McMuffin, which has become a McDonald's breakfast signature item, in 1972. Peterson was said to like eggs benedict, so he worked to develop a breakfast item which was similar to it for the fast food chain. Peterson eventually came up with the Egg McMuffin, which was an egg sandwich consisting of an egg formed in a Teflon circle with the yolks broken, topped with Canadian bacon and a slice of cheese. The Egg McMuffin was served as an open faced sandwich on a buttered and toasted English muffin.

Willard Scott

imageWillard Scott

Willard Herman Scott, Jr. (born March 7, 1934) is an American weather presenter, author, television personality, actor, clown, comedian and radio personality, best known for his TV work on the Today show and as the creator and original portrayer of Ronald McDonald.

Scott was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on March 7, 1934, and attended George Washington High School. He showed an interest in broadcasting as a 16-year-old, working in 1950 as an NBC page at WRC-AM, NBC's owned-and-operated radio station in Washington, D.C. Scott then attended American University, where he worked alongside fellow student Ed Walker at WAMU-AM, the university's radio station (1951–1953). Scott became a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity while at American University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and religion.

From 1955 to 1972, Scott teamed with Ed Walker as co-host of the nightly Joy Boys radio program on WRC-AM. (This was interrupted from 1956 to 1958 when Scott served on active duty with the U.S.Navy.) Scott routinely sketched a list of characters and a few lead lines setting up a situation, which Walker would commit to memory or make notes on with his Braille typewriter (Walker was blind since birth). In a 1999 article recalling the Joy Boys at the height of their popularity in the mid-1960s, The Washington Post said they "dominated Washington, providing entertainment, companionship, and community to a city on the verge of powerful change". The Joy Boys show played on WRC until 1972 when they moved to cross-town station WWDC for another two years. Scott wrote in his book, The Joy of Living, of their close professional and personal bond which continued until Walker's death in October 2015, saying that they are "closer than most brothers".

James A. Skinner

James Alan Skinner (born 1944) is an American business executive. He is the executive chairman of Walgreens Boots Alliance. He was the vice chairman and CEO of McDonald's Corporation.

James Alan Skinner was born in Moline, Illinois, United States, the son of Leon Skinner, a bricklayer, who died in 2006, aged 84.

Skinner grew up in Davenport, Iowa and graduated from West High School there in 1962.

He went on to serve nearly 10 years in the United States Navy.

Skinner began his career with McDonald's in 1971 as a restaurant manager trainee in Carpentersville, Illinois. He never graduated from college, attending Roosevelt University in Chicago, before dropping out after his sophomore year.

Prior to becoming CEO, Skinner was President and Chief Operating Officer of the McDonald's Restaurant Group with corporate management responsibility for Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA), and Latin America. Prior to that, he was responsible for McDonald's Japan Limited, their second-largest market. Skinner held numerous positions in the U.S. Corporation, including Director of Field Operations, Market Manager, Regional Vice President and U.S. Senior Vice President and Zone Manager.

Skinner was named CEO of McDonald's Corp in 2004 and refocused the company on customer strategies, business disciplines and close global alignment. Jim Skinner was succeeded as Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for McDonald’s Corporation by Don Thompson on June 30, 2012. Vice Chairman was a position that he held before becoming CEO in November 2004.

His greatest accomplishment, the "Plan to Win" strategy, managed to flip the company by reversing its falling profits. This strategy focused on improving on locations that already existed instead of expanding and building more. They hoped to achieve “faster, friendlier service; tastier food; a more appealing ambiance; better value; and sharper marketing.” By shifting strategies, Skinner and his team were able to increase McDonald’s total sales, increasing from $50.1 billion in 2004 to $70.1 billion in 2008.
