Peachy Keens is a chain of restaurants operating in Nottingham and Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Peachy Keens operates an all-you-can-eat buffet style of cuisine, serving dishes from six cultures: Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Italian and Indian. The restaurants employ chefs to cook some dishes to order as a live demonstration; the rest of the dishes are cooked behind-the-scenes and then served in warmed containers on a buffet-style counter.

As of April 2017, the Manchester location had disappeared from the companies website, and according to Companies House the Nottingham location had been put into liquidation with Pheonix Corporate Recovery named as the appointed liquidator. It is not clear, however, if the restaurants are still trading.

Ponderosa Steakhouse and Bonanza Steakhouse

imagePonderosa Steakhouses, Inc.
Bonanza Steakhouses, Inc.

Ponderosa Steakhouse and Bonanza Steakhouse are a chain of buffet/steakhouse restaurants that are a part of Homestyle Dining LLC based in Plano, Texas.

Unlike other chains with two names, such as Checkers and Rally's, which uses only one of the names in a given region, restaurants in a given region could be named either Bonanza or Ponderosa. This is because Bonanza and Ponderosa were separate companies, which were later merged under the Metromedia Restaurant Group.

The names of the restaurants are derived from the classic TV series Bonanza, which was set at a place called Ponderosa Ranch.

In 1963, Dan Blocker, who played Eric "Hoss" Cartwright on Bonanza, started the Bonanza Steakhouse chain. The first Bonanza opened in Westport, Connecticut. Sam Wyly and his brother Charles Wyly bought the small Bonanza restaurant chain three years later. The company grew to approximately 600 restaurants by 1989, when the Wylys sold it.

In 1965, Dan Lasater, Norm Wiese and Charles Kleptz founded Ponderosa in Kokomo, Indiana. Ponderosa began operations to Canada by at least 1971, amid little apparent demand in the US, and remained in Canada until 1984, when the post-recession US appeared to present a more viable market for expansion. After closing all Canadian Ponderosa restaurant locations, the company returned to generating US restaurant franchises in 1985, reversing a previous freeze on new US franchises in the move to Canada. At that time, 36 Canadian Ponderosa locations were acquired by General Mills Restaurant Group which later converted them to Red Lobster restaurants. In the meantime, Bonanza maintained a presence in Canada.

In 1997, Ponderosa and Bonanza united under the Metromedia Family Steakhouses organization to form a single restaurant concept marketed under either the Ponderosa or Bonanza brand. MFS was a forerunner company of the former Metromedia entertainment conglomerate founded by John Kluge.

Sizzler

imageSizzler USA Restaurants, Inc.

Sizzler is a United States-basedrestaurant chain with headquarters in Mission Viejo, California. It is known for steak, seafood, and salad bar items.

The chain was founded in 1958 as Del's Sizzler Family Steak House by Del and Helen Johnson in Culver City, California. The chain is composed of more than 270 locations throughout the U.S. Most of Sizzler's U.S. locations are in the West.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Sizzler promoted mainly steak and combination steak dinners with an optional salad bar. The restaurant wanted to give the customer the feel of a full-service restaurant, but at a price just slightly more than that of a fast food chain. To keep costs down, many of the restaurants had their own in-house meat cutters where they would cut their own steaks and grind their own hamburgers. Heading into the mid 1980s, competition began to appear from other casual-dining restaurants such as Ponderosa Steakhouse and Bonanza Steakhouse. After promotions such as all-you-can-eat fried shrimp, the chain decided to expand its popular salad bar into a full buffet promoted as the "Buffet Court." Patrons began to use the buffet as their meal instead of an add-on to an entree. In response, Sizzler began to lower the quality of food in other areas of the menu. Customers took notice and Sizzler's reputation suffered. Sizzler filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1996 ("primarily to void leases"), closed 140 of 215 stores and changed its logo. The company reemerged from chapter 11 in 1997. During the late 1990s, new management upgraded the quality of food but also increased prices. Twenty one locations were closed in 2001. Sizzler began an image makeover around 2002. A new restaurant concept was created featuring a lighter and more open dining room. The changes were accompanied with a new menu. In an effort to return to its roots, steaks, seafood, and the salad bar are now being reemphasized while the all-you-can-eat buffet is being phased out.

Swagman Restaurant

The Swagman Restaurant was a restaurant in Ferntree Gully, Melbourne, Australia, which opened in 1972 and burnt down in 1991. The restaurant was famous in Melbourne for its long-running television commercials, cabaret shows, and smorgasbord.

The Swagman was located on Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully. It was owned by Bastiaan (Basil) and Ina De Jong. An unusually large establishment, The Swagman eventually had a capacity of 1,200 seats and covered 20,000 square metres, and was noted for attracting buses of tourists from rural and international locations, especially Japan.

The floor shows, featuring dancers, singers, and other acts, were quite unique in Melbourne at that time. The shows changed every three months. Choreographers included Coral Deague, Jan Rogers, and Jodie Greenwood. Greenwood was a dancer and performer at the Swagman for 14 years, and was the choreographer from 1979 until 1991, when the restaurant burnt down. She featured in all the television commercials for the restaurant, which played on late-night commercial television for many years. Performers who played at the venue included Frank Amorosi (father of Vanessa Amorosi), David Gould, Dean Lotherington, Sean Martin Hingston, Debbie Reynolds, Robert Goulet, the Mills Brothers, Dr. Hook, Pilita Corrales, and the Village People. Paul Sheean at age 16 was the youngest singer to perform full-time in the cabaret floorshow.

The Swagman burnt down at around 4:30 a.m. on 27 May 1991. The fire was front page news in Melbourne. The insurance firm Royal Insurance alleged arson and refused to pay the $7 million claim made by the owners of the restaurant, who then sued for the amount. The case was confidentially settled in October 1992. After the settlement, however, the owners were sued by the ANZ Bank, who also alleged arson. The restaurant was not rebuilt after the fire. The owners sold the property, on which the Stylus nightclub was then built. The new owners hired Basil De Jong to manage the nightclub.

Taybarns

imageTaybarns

Taybarns was an English low-cost all-you-can-eat restaurant chain owned by Whitbread, modelled on the Golden Corral chain in the United States. Customers paid on arrival and could eat as much food as they liked from a 34-metre-long food counter. As with most buffets, there was a lower price at lunchtime than evenings, and a slightly higher charge was levied at weekends and during bank holidays. Food choices consisted of themed counters, including a salad bar, soup, "Best of British" (encapsulating the former "chip shop" and "carvery" counters), pizza, "The Spice Rack" (Tex-Mex), pasta, grill, and dessert, as well as free refills of soft drinks and a separate drinks menu for alcoholic drinks.

In March 2016 it was announced that following a strategic corporate review all Taybarns Restaurants would close and convert to Brewers Fayre pub restaurants in 2016. When the South Shields Taybarns closed on 13 September 2016, the business became defunct.

The seven Taybarns restaurants were in Barnsley, Coventry, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Gateshead, South Shields, Swansea, and Wigan. In late 2009, the company made public its intention to expand rapidly, with some Brewers Fayre pubs to be converted to the Taybarns brand and up to 30 new restaurants to open the following year. However, the company was unable to open new restaurants due to the high costs of such extensive refurbishments and in 2016 it was announced that all seven sites would be returned to the Brewers Fayre brand.
