It was the opening track on their 1972 album Carl and the Passions – "So Tough". In its only known chart entry internationally it peaked at #29 on the official Netherlands Top 100.
British indie rock band Hefner released a cover of "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" as a bonus track to their 1999 single "The Hymn for the Cigarettes".
