"Y Hubo Alguien" (Eng.: And There Was Somebody) is a song written by the Panamanian songwriter Omar Alfanno and performed by Marc Anthony. It was released in October 1997 as the lead single from Anthony's third album Contra La Corriente. The single became a success and was the first salsa to reach #1 on Hot Latin Tracks. "Y Hubo Alguien" was awarded two Billboard Latin Music Awards and a Lo Nuestro award.
Omar Alfanno had worked with Anthony on the previous album, Todo a Su Tiempo. The song is about a woman who regrets leaving a man only to find out that he found another woman in her place when he was alone.
"Y Hubo Alguien" reached #1 on Hot Latin Tracks during the week of November 29, 1997. The song remained at #1 for four consecutive weeks. This was Anthony's first song to reach #1 as well as the first time in the Hot Latin Tracks that a salsa genre song became #1. (The previous highest peaking salsa song was "Que Hay de Malo" by Jerry Rivera which reached #4 in 1993.) It was succeeded at #1 by Alejandro Fernández and Gloria Estefan with "En el jardín".
In 1998, "Y Hubo Alguien" received two Billboard Latin Music Awards for "Hot Latin Track of the Year" and "Tropical Hot Track of the Year". In the same year, the song was named "Tropical Song of the Year" at the Premio Lo Nuestro awards. Omar Alfanno received a Latin ASCAP award for the song. The song was named the 7th best salsa song of all time by AOL Radio.
This song has been covered by Jackie Arredondo, Marcos Orozco, Fidel Rueda, Myriam and Beny Grabiel. In 2010, Angel Lopez, the former lead singer of Son by Four, recorded his own version of the song for the album Historias de Amor. The album was produced by the composer Omar Alfanno.
