Wister is a town in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,002 at the 2000 census. Wister was named for Gutman G. Wister, an official of the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad (KO&G), and the father of noted writer Owen Wister.

A post office named Wister was establlshed June 30,1890, at the present location of the town of Wister, Oklahoma.

Wister is located at 34°58′6″N 94°43′23″W / 34.96833°N 94.72306°W / 34.96833; -94.72306 (34.968411, -94.723191). Wister is 55 miles (89 km) east of McAlester and 20 miles (32 km) west of the Oklahoma-Arkansas border.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (2.04%) is water.

Wister, OK is also the location of a popular Army Corps of Engineers lake with same name. Crappie, Bass and Catfish are the most frequently sought fish species in lake. Along with fishing, Wister Lake also offers a wide variety of tourist activities like camping, waterskiing and swimming.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,002 people, 412 households, and 276 families residing in the town. The population density was 694.3 people per square mile (268.7/km²). There were 450 housing units at an average density of 311.8 per square mile (120.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 83.93% White, 11.18% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 4.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.20% of the population.
