William A. Bell, Sr. (born June 1, 1949) is an American politician who is the 28th and current Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. A member of the Democratic Party, he assumed office in 2010. Bell previously held the office on an interim basis in 1999. Bell was elected following a run-off with Patrick Cooper. Bell won the run-off with 53.6% to Cooper's 46.4%.
Bell served several terms on the Birmingham City Council. In 1985, he became the first African-American to serve as President of the Birmingham City Council, having been elected to that position by the members of the council.
On December 15, 2015, Bell and city councilor Marcus Lundy were involved in a physical altercation with one another.
