Trapp went to the University of Akron where he started in 45 games for the team from 2011 to 2012, scoring once.
During his youth career in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, Trapp received many accolades. He then made his professional debut with the side in a league match on July 6, 2013 against the Portland Timbers at MAPFRE Stadium in which he started and played the full 90 minutes as the Crew won the match 1–0, ending the Timbers' 15-match unbeaten streak.
On September 13, 2014, Trapp scored his first professional goal, in a 2–2 draw at the Houston Dynamo.
