Westfield UTC, formerly known as University Towne Centre, is a one-million square-foot, three-level outdoor shopping center in the University City community of San Diego, California. It lies just east of La Jolla, near the University of California, San Diego campus. It is owned by the Westfield Corporation. Its anchor stores include Sears, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. It features a 14-screen Arclight Cinema.
In 2008 a one-billion dollar revitalization plan for the shopping center was approved by the San Diego City Council. However, due to the recession, the revitalization project was put on hold for several years. In 2011, the first phase of the revitalization commenced: the mall's food court was transformed into an indoor/outdoor Dining Terrace while the former Robinsons-May building was subdivided to house three new retailers: a large-scale Forever 21 clothing store, a relocated 24 Hour Fitness sports club, and a 14-screen ArcLight Cinema and adding Tiffany & Co., J.Crew, and Tesla Motors. In 2016, the second phase of construction began, with construction projected to conclude in 2017. This expansion will include a new parking structure on the west side, 251,000 square feet of new retail space, and a new 144,000 square foot Nordstrom anchor, to replace the existing one. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) has confirmed that the San Diego Trolley will expand to UTC Transit Center by 2021, as part of the Blue Line.
