Werner Gustav Schulz (born January 22, 1950 in Zwickau) is a German politician (Alliance '90/The Greens). He was from 1990 to 2005 a Member of the German Bundestag and from 2009-2014 a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). Schulz is considered the only profiled civil rights activist from East Germany who prevailed permanently in his party.
Werner Schulz grew up in Zwickau, the son of an independent haulage contractor and former professional officer from a social-democratic dominated family. From 1964 to 1968, he attended the "" Advanced High School. His father forbade him to join the Young Pioneers. He received a degree in Food Technology at the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1972. From 1974 he worked as a research assistant working at the Humboldt University.
