Chief Wayne Unser is a fictional character on the FX television series Sons of Anarchy, played by Dayton Callie. He was the Chief of the fictional Charming, California Police Department and was also a known associate of SAMCRO. Chief Unser sees SAMCRO as a benefit to the town, because the Sons aim to keep drugs and violence out of Charming and protect the population from threats even less desirable than the club (such as ruthless developer Jacob Hale, Jr.). Unser plans to retire, surrendering his post to Deputy Chief David Hale, but is forced to resume his duties when Hale is killed in a hit and run/drive-by at the beginning of season 3.

Despite serving as chief of police, Unser's ties to SAMCRO tighten over the course of the series. This is most evident when he helps the club to kill corrupt ATF Agent June Stahl and club nemesis Jimmy O'Phalen. Unser is ousted as Chief of Police when the city decides to let the county sheriffs taking over policing duties. Unser eventually grows very close with the Teller family and SAMCRO, frequently intervening in problems to find acceptable solutions and helping prevent infighting among each other. Unser ends up retiring, but due to the expenses of his cancer treatment is forced to sell his house and business and moves into a trailer. Ever since, he is often seen helping the Teller family in many tasks. He also uses his connections to aid the club in avoiding law enforcement investigations and gang warfare.

Conflicting loyalties within the Teller family and the club eventually convince Unser to rejoin law enforcement as an ad hoc investigator for Lt. Althea Jarry of the San Joaquin County Sheriffs Department. Unser goes to these extreme measures in hopes of finally stopping all the bloodshed the club is causing and suffering from. In the penultimate episode of the series, Jax Teller kills Wayne while he is trying to arrest Gemma Teller-Morrow (to prevent her son Jax from killing her).

Unser is a native of the small Northern Californian town of Charming and is in his 50s. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. When he returned Stateside, he joined the police force and became Chief of the Charming Police Department. He also owned Unser Shipping, a trucking company, though he later sold it. He was "married to a dark-skinned woman" named Della, and they have two daughters. He is suffering from bladder cancer and smokes marijuana for pain relief. He is corrupt officer in that he uses his position to aid the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, a local biker gang. However, he never accepted any money from them, stating that he was in no one's pocket. Unser believes that SAMCRO's crimes are minor compared to the Club's ability to keep violence out of Charming, whose residents he greatly cares for.
