Waiwhetū is a suburb of Lower Hutt, Wellington situated at the bottom of the North Island of New Zealand.
In the settler period it was worked by Irish-born Alfred Ludlam, who was a member of three of New Zealand's four earliest parliaments.
Waiwhetū is largely built on land set aside as a native reserve for the Te Āti Awa tribe in the 1840s. In the 1930s the land was compulsorily acquired by the government, with new homes being built for the Te Āti Awa.
Founded in 1960, Waiwhetū Marae features a number of significant carvings and a number of notable Māori artists are associated with it, including Rangi Hetet who did much of the original carving for the marae, his wife Erenora Puketapu-Hetet and their daughter Veranoa Hetet. Also associated with the marae are Ihakara Puketapu and Ihaia Porutu Puketapu
