Vernon Township is a civil township of Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,980 at the 2000 census. The village of Vernon is located within the township.
Vernon Township was named after Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 34.1 square miles (88.2 km²), of which 33.9 square miles (87.8 km²) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.4 km²) (0.50%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,980 people, 1,881 households, and 1,470 families residing in the township. The population density was 146.9 per square mile (56.7/km²). There were 2,782 housing units at an average density of 82.1 per square mile (31.7/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.45% White, 0.12% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.52% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.79% of the population.
There were 1,881 households out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% were non-families. 17.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 2.97.
