Venice High School is a secondary school located in Venice, Florida which educates students in grades 9–12.
History == Venice High School was built in the late 1940s in Nokomis, FL, a short distance north of Venice. The NEW high school (grades 9-12)was opened in 1956 with John E. Davis as its first principal. Venice Junior High (grades 7-9) was opened in approx. 1959 when the student body outgrew the "new" high school. Guy Rose served as the first Vice Principal under Davis and was in charge of the Junior High. The original buildings remained mostly unchanged until 2012 when the high school and junior high were demolished (the original gymnasium and Powell-Davis Stadium remained) to build the new, state of the art facility that exists today. The new campus was completed in 2014 including a new music suite housing the chorus and band and a city-mandated performing arts center.
In 2006 Venice High School was named an "A" school by the Florida Department of Education. In 2007 the school missed the 525 points needed for an"A" grade by 4 points receiving a score of 521 to earn a "B" grade. The school has increased its graduation rate from 63.9% in 1999 to 84.7% in 2007. Its dropout rate is 1.6%.
Venice is known for its athletics programs, including state championships in volleyball (1998, 2005, 2012, 2014) and baseball (2007, 2012, 2013, 2015). Venice's football program, coached by John Peacock, has been recognized as one of the best teams in the state, making several state championship appearances since their one and only state championship win in 2000 (7th in nation).
Venice High School is a community-oriented school that boasts a student body of more than 2000 students with a 70-acre campus located on the island of Venice.
Featured programs include Career Technical Education: PC Support, Health Options, Digital Design, Early Childhood, Culinary Arts, Engineering and Business Entrepreneurial pathways. In addition, VHS offers an extensive array of college- credit courses with more than 1300 enrollments in Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses. Both the Performing and Visual Arts programs are recognized for their excellence and are an integral part of our community. The MCJROTC program is a vital and well-respected part of our school and cadets demonstrate leadership throughout the area. Of course, all students are encouraged to be involved with more than 40 clubs available to choose.
Venice High School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program which is an academically focused curriculum for students ages sixteen to eighteen (grades 11 and 12) preparing to enter university. For students planning to enter most European and Commonwealth universities, the IB Diploma is usually the only guarantee for university admission available to international students. For American universities, successful participation in IB courses can promote university acceptance, while successful completion of IB exams can lead to university course credit and/or advanced university placement. The IB programme is structured to accommodate every motivated, sincere and serious student.
