Vellai Roja (English: White Rose) is a 1983 Indian Tamil-language film, directed by A. Jagannathan and produced by V. Viswanathan. The film stars Sivaji Ganesan, Ambika, Prabhu and Radha in lead roles. The film had musical score by Ilayaraja. It is a remake of the Malayalam film Post Mortem. It was remade in Kannada as Dharmathma in 1988 with Tiger Prabhakar reprising the role of Sivaji Ganesan and Shankar Nag reprising the role of Prabhu]. This film was later made in Hindi as Tahqiqaat in 1993 with Jeetendra in the lead.
Father James (Sivaji Ganesan) is a well-respected Catholic Priest by the entire town. Parisutham (Calcutta Viswanathan) is a multimillionaire and head of the town, Peter (Prabhu) an angry young man, who always fights for justice and anti to rich people, who is a son of a coffin maker Savaerimuthu(G. Srinivasan). Peter's sister Mary (Radha), Parisutham's son Johny (Suresh) are in love. Mary becomes pregnant, at that time Johny have to leave the country for few days, so she takes Father's help to make her marriage the Johny because both Parisutham and Peter respect his words. But Peter misunderstands that the Father and Mary were involved in a relationship and he blames the Father for this and assaults him. Peter gets arrested but he escapes. Next Day Mary hanging dead from a tree branch. Everyone things that she has committed suicide and she has bared without making postmortem. But the Father has a doubt on it, so he asks his twin brother S.P. David (again Sivaji Ganesan) a Police officer to have the body exhumed in order to perform a postmortem. The next day when S.P. David exhumes Mary's coffin, a shocking incident, he finds Father James dead body in it. Everyone suspects Peter was the culprit, S.P. David immediately begins an investigation to breakout the mystery behind missing of Mary's dead body and Father's death.
