The University of Nicosia (Greek: Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας Turkish: Lefkoşa Üniversitesi) is the largest university in Cyprus, with campuses based in the three largest cities in Cyprus: Nicosia, Lemesos and Larnaca. It was formally known, until September 2007, as Intercollege. The University enrolls over 11,000 students, approximately 4,000 of which are based in Nicosia.

The University of Nicosia has established itself as a dynamic and respected international institution of higher education in just 31 years. It is the only University in Cyprus with a system of three campuses in the major cities of Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca.

Beginning as a small educational institution preparing Cypriots for professional examinations, the University of Nicosia is today a vibrant international university where students of many ages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds may earn undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as professional qualifications at a significant cost advantage and, for many of them, close to home. The University of Nicosia is the largest private university in Cyprus; its current enrollment is over 11,000 students.

The history of the University is characterized by strategic growth: the systematic addition of certificate and degree programs through the Master’s level, the establishment of academic links with other universities and professional bodies, expansion to the cities of Limassol and Larnaca, the recruitment and retention of doctoral or professionally qualified faculty, an increasing emphasis on research and publications and a strategic goal to become the first and best private university in Cyprus.

Intercollege was founded in 1980 by private initiative in order to prepare students for the examinations of recognized British professional bodies, such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Communication, Advertising and Marketing Foundation (CAM).

In 1981, Dr Nicos Peristianis, the present Executive Dean of University of Nicosia, was appointed Director and the College began expanding its programs towards academic degrees. In its first decade of operation, Intercollege developed and modified courses of study in accordance with the College's growing constituencies, the needs of the Cypriot labor market, and the College's founding mission to provide quality higher education at reasonable cost in Cyprus.

To this end, Intercollege prepared students for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations, which were accepted by the University of the State of New York and the Thomas Edison State College towards their external degrees. Through hard work and persistence, the College has steadily developed into a respected Cypriot college that awards its own diplomas, bachelor's and master's degrees on three campuses. In September 2007, the 27-year-old College was acknowledged as a University and now uses the name University of Nicosia, Cyprus. The University continues to offer a number of professional programs such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT), and the Chartered Institute of Banking.
