University of California Humanities Research Institute

The University of California Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI), is a university system-wide research institute at the University of California under the University of California Office of the President and headquartered at the UC Irvine campus. It promotes collaboration and interdisciplinarity through supporting work by teams of researchers from varying fields both within and outside of the UC system. Through its dedication to "engaging connections," the Institute seeks to address the traditional humanities disciplines such as literature, philosophy, classics, languages, and history in new and innovative ways, as well as the pressing humanistic questions that arise in the social and natural sciences, medicine, and technology. Consequently, one primary focus of the Institution is overcoming and destroying the historic intellectual and institutional barriers separating the humanities from the sciences, technology, and the professions.

Every year, UCHRI hosts three to five research groups in residence. The Institute also sponsors a wide range of various workshops, conferences, and research projects at all of the ten UC campuses. It regularly collaborates with the other UC campus humanities centers. Recent projects have focused on topics as diverse as improvisation, medical humanities, and the digital technologies.

David Theo Goldberg, PhD, was appointed Director in 2000. He also is Professor of Comparative Literature and Criminology, Law and Society at UC Irvine, is a Fellow of the UCI Critical Theory Institute, and co-founded the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC) with Cathy Davidson of Duke University.
