The United Kingdom held a national preselection to choose the song that would go to the Eurovision Song Contest 2004. It was held on 28 February 2004 and presented by Terry Wogan and Gaby Roslin. The show was called "Making Your Mind Up", in homage to the UK's 1981 winner, and was won by James Fox.
In the Eurovision Song Contest itself, the song received 29 points and finished in 16th place. Enrap-ture were a 3 girl hip-hop band from Norway, Denmark and England consisting of Stacey, Mercedes and Kelly. Haifa was in the first series of Pop Idol. Hyrise are Matt, Maxwell and Ben and 21-year-old Anthony Scott-Lee the brother to Lisa Scott-Lee from the pop group Steps.
During BBC One's coverage of the contest, last year's UK entry, Cry Baby was sung in perfect rendition by Jemini after criticism of their song. The Band said that the monitors were switched off and, as such, the backing track could not be heard in their earpieces. The band then proved these claims by performing it in the 2004 contest.
The United Kingdom was the twentieth country to perform in the Grand Final just after Poland. Lorraine Kelly was the United Kingdom's spokesperson this year. The United Kingdom finished 16th with 29 points. A total of ten countries voted for the United Kingdom, six of them being from eastern Europe. The United Kingdom gave 12 points to Greece and 10 points to Cyprus in both the Semi-Final and Grand Final.
