Uhtred of Bebbanburg is the protagonist and main character of the best selling Saxon Stories novel series by Bernard Cornwell and the BBC television adaptation, The Last Kingdom. Uhtred is in part based upon the historical Uhtred the Bold from the 11th century. However, the timeline of the fictional Uhtred fits better with Uhtred, an ealdorman of Derbyshire who flourished in the 10th century, believed to have come from Northumbria. Over the nine current books, Uhtred, a Saxon pagan, has become increasingly complex in his loyalty and general attitude.

Uhtred was born as the son of Ealdorman Uhtred, Lord of Bebbanburg, and raised to have hatred towards the surrounding kingdoms of Mercia, East Anglia, Wessex, Scotland and the Danes. Uhtred was originally called Osbert and was the younger of Ealdorman Uhtred's sons. The name Uhtred was given by tradition to the oldest son, but after his older brother was killed in a failed attack, Osbert's name was changed to Uhtred. Uhtred was never taught swordsmanship in his nine years at Bebbanburg as his stepmother wanted him to pursue a life dedicated to being a priest. However, this did not stop Uhtred from wishing to go to battle.

Wishing to reclaim Eoferwic, which was captured In 866 when the Danish army began to arrive in Northumbria, the Ealdorman of Babbenburg joined forces with another lord to fight against the Danes and reclaim Eoferwic. However, Ealdorman Uhtred was killed in a failed assault. Meanwhile, His 11 year old son Uhtred snuck out of the Castle against his fathers wishes to fight with him. However, he was captured by the Danes following a furious but feeble attack on a Danish warlord after seeing his father stabbed through the throat in battle. After this the warlord, Ragnar the Fearless, son of Ravn, decided to take Uhtred as a slave rather than to kill him due to his bravery when fighting against him. Ragnar began to grow fond of Uhtred, and decided to purchase him when the other danish Earls tried to ransom him back to the new Ealdorman of Northumbria, Uhtreds uncle. Uhtred found that living with the Danes was a much freer existence than with the pious Christians and their dour priests at Bebbanburg and embraced the Danish gods of Thor, Odin, and Hoder. Despite murdering his father, Uhtred came to love Ragnar as a father and became a brother to Ragnar's sons, Ragnar and Rorik, and daughter, Thyra.
