The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music has three departments (Ethnomusicology, Music, Musicology). Judith Smith, previously acting/interim dean, has been appointed the first dean, effective March 1, 2017. It was "designated as a standalone school at UCLA in January" 2016 and Smith "will be charged with establishing the Herb Alpert School of Music’s brand as a professional school on and beyond campus."
Created in 2007 with a $30 million grant from the Herb Alpert Foundation, the school operated under the auspices of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 2015, they decided to ask the University of California to become the UC system’s first independent music school. In January 2016, the Board of Regents voted to formally establish the Herb Alpert School of Music, the first new school at UCLA since the School of Public Affairs more than 20 years before. In 2017, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music received a $1.5 million gift from the Lowell Milken Family Foundation to establish the Lowell Milken Fund for American Jewish Music.
