Trapped is a 2002 American-German crime thriller film based on Greg Iles' bestselling novel 24 Hours and directed by Luis Mandoki. It stars Charlize Theron, Courtney Love, Stuart Townsend, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Fanning and Pruitt Taylor Vince, and was released on September 20, 2002.
Joe Hickey (Kevin Bacon) is a man who is apparently in the business of kidnapping rich people's children for ransom with his wife Cheryl (Courtney Love) and cousin Marvin as his accomplices. Will Jennings (Stuart Townsend), the father/husband in a typical happy family, is a research physician who has just had his big career break by patenting a new anesthetic drug. The mother/wife, Karen Jennings (Charlize Theron), is a stay-at-home mother who was previously a nurse.
The couple's daughter Abby (Dakota Fanning) is kidnapped by Joe and Marvin. While Marvin takes Abby to his cabin, Joe holds Karen hostage. Meanwhile, Cheryl keeps Will at gunpoint and tells him about his daughter's kidnapping after he just gets out of a ceremony in which he is honored for his career. It is subsequently revealed that Cheryl and Joe kidnapped Abby because they believe that Will killed their daughter Katie, who had a tumor. Will admits that it was the surgeon who killed her because he was unable to stop her bleeding during the operation. Abby then starts to have an asthma attack and refuses to drink coffee provided by Marvin who mistakes her for Katie. While being watched by Joe, Karen gives Abby medicine in order to battle her illness and tries to get her back, but is forced to spend the night with Joe. He and Karen have sex together, but she slices him with a concealed knife and heads to her bathroom where she receives a phone call from Abby. She attempts to escape from Marvin's cabin but is immediately recaptured by him. He devises a plan with Abby about the exchange, while Karen stitches up Joe's wound.
