"Torn" is a song, known best as Australian pop singer Natalie Imbruglia's debut single. It became a worldwide hit. In 1997–1998, Imbruglia's recording peaked at number one on singles charts in Belgium, Denmark, Canada, Spain and Sweden; and on Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Top 40 charts. It reached number two on Imbruglia's home country's ARIA Singles Chart as well as in Italy, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
The song was originally written by American alternative rock band Ednaswap from their eponymous debut album, released in 1995. Other singers and musicians have covered the song.
"Torn" was written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven with producer Phil Thornalley as a solo song for Preven; Cutler and Preven's band Ednaswap then performed it.
The song was first recorded by the Danish singer Lis Sørensen after it was translated by Elisabeth Gjerluff Nielsen, as "Brændt" (Burned).
Ednaswap released their recorded version in 1995, then it was covered several times. The song follows the previous single "Glow" as their second single from their eponymous debut album. Thornalley and Cutler produced the session. A cover version of the song was recorded in 1996 by Norwegian singer Trine Rein.
