The Sons of the Dragon is a novelette by George R. R. Martin. It is set in the Westeros of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, hundreds of years before the events of A Game of Thrones (1996) during the reigns of two Targaryen kings, Aenys I and Maegor I "The Cruel", both sons of the first Targaryen king, Aegon I "The Conqueror". Following an early leak of the novella's inclusion in the anthology The Book of Swords by Martin's longtime friend Gardner Dozois, Martin himself confirmed that the anthology was scheduled to be released on October 10, 2017.
The story is derived from previously written material that Martin had prepared for the companion book The World of Ice & Fire, but due to the length of the publication at the time, it was trimmed for future publication.
