The Pale is the first of four EPs that will make up the fifth William Control studio album, entitled Revelations. It was released on Control Records on October 14, 2016 and hit number one on both the Billboard dance/electronic chart and the Heatseekers album chart, as well as number 13 on the Billboard alternative album chart, number 14 on the Billboard independent album chart, number 57 on the Billboard top current album chart, and number 63 on the Billboard top album sales chart. Pre-order packages through Control's own Control Merch website sold out within a very short space of time.

All of the four tracks have been released as singles, with "The Monster" in September, followed by "Confess" in October, "When the Love Is Pain" in November 2016, and "Mother Superior" in January 2017. "The Monster" was shot in New York City in July 2016 by Terry Matlin, "Confess" was filmed in an Edinburgh cemetery by Kenneth Fletcher during the band's September 2016 UK Synths and Sinners Tour, "When the Love Is Pain" was directed by Jacob Johnston in Los Angeles on Halloween 2016, and "Mother Superior" was shot in Seattle and directed by Kevin Preston. All 4 songs were played live on every date of the UK Synths and Sinners Tour.

The tracks for the entire Revelations album were recorded over the course of 2016 at Control's Hell's Half Acre studio. The EP was produced and engineered by Kenneth Fletcher, and engineered and mixed by Axel Otero of the band Lay Your Ghost. It was mastered by John Troxell. Fans were invited down to the Control Merch shop to record gang vocals for some tracks.

The other three EPs will be named The Black, The Red and The White, after the four horses of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

All tracks written by William Control, Kenneth Fletcher and Axel Otero.
