"The One That Got Away" is a song written by Nathan Winkler (co-written by Natasha Bedingfield, Steve Kipner, Andrew Frampton and Michael Tafaro) for Bedingfield's 2005 North American debut album Unwritten. The song was backed by remixes by Wamdue and Valentin, was released as a promotional single in the United States in May 2006. The song was released in the United Kingdom as a B-side to "These Words" (2004).
In the United States, the track topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and reached number four on the Hot Dance Airplay chart.
Backstory: The original writer, Nathan Winkler went to a talent show/music event and was mesmerised by the MC for the evening. He went home that Friday night and couldn't sleep, so he put his thoughts into words. In the album version the narrator falls in love with someone she has only just seen, but is too nervous to make a move. She hopes the stranger will respond as well and "meet [her] in the middle." The demo of the song was given to the girl that the song was written for, but they never met.
