The Final Mission of Extortion 17: Special Ops, Helicopter Support, SEAL Team Six, And The Deadliest Day of The U.S. War in Afghanistan is a book by Author Ed Darack to be published on 19 September 2017 about the downing of Extortion 17, a U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter, in the Tangi Valley of Afghanistan's Maidan Wardak Province in the early morning hours of 6 August 2011. The book grew out of Darack's work on his Air & Space/Smithsonian article, The Final Flight of Extortion 17, published in that magazine's February / March, 2015 issue. According to an interview with Darack, the book will provide never-before revealed insight into the tragedy, relying on interviews from a host of people close to those of the tragedy who have never been interviewed before and provide the first complete, accurate accounting of the downing, including debunking a number of myths and conspiracy theories. The book is being published by Smithsonian Books with distribution by Penguin Random House.
