The Big Sick is an American romantic comedy film directed by Michael Showalter, from a screenplay by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. It stars Nanjiani, Ray Romano, Holly Hunter, and Zoe Kazan.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2017. It is scheduled to be released on June 23, 2017, by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate.
The Big Sick is based on the real courtship of Kumail Nanjiani and his now-wife, Emily Gordon. Kumail's traditional Muslim family are unhappy with his relationship with Emily, an American. When Emily is waylaid by a mysterious illness, Kumail must take charge of the crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry.
In December 2015, it was announced Kumail Nanjiani would star in the film from a screenplay written by him and Emily V. Gordon, while Judd Apatow will produce alongside Barry Mendel under their Apatow Productions banner, while FilmNation Entertainment will finance the film. In February 2016, Zoe Kazan joined the cast. In April 2016, Holly Hunter and Ray Romano joined the cast of the film. In May 2016, Aidy Bryant, Bo Burnham and Kurt Braunohler joined the cast of the film. That same month, Adeel Akhtar joined the cast of the film.Michael Andrews composed the film's score.
