The Belko Experiment is a 2016 American horror thriller film directed by Greg McLean and written by James Gunn. The film stars John Gallagher, Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Adria Arjona, and Melonie Diaz. Filming began on June 1, 2015 in Bogotá, Colombia. The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2016. The film is scheduled to be released on March 17, 2017, in the United States, by Blumhouse Tilt and Orion Pictures. The production companies for the film are Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and the Safran Company, and will be distributed by Blumhouse Tilt and Orion Pictures.
In a dark social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogota, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.
On March 31, 2015, James Gunn posted on Facebook about his upcoming thriller film, The Belko Experiment, to which he wrote the script and was intended to produce along with Peter Safran. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was set to finance the film, while Greg McLean was set to direct. The film is about an American company based in South America and its employees are ordered to kill each other or be killed.
On May 18, 2015, John Gallagher Jr. joined the cast. On May 19, 2015, Tony Goldwyn joined the cast. On May 20, 2015, Melonie Diaz was cast in the film. On May 22, 2015, Michael Rooker joined the cast. On May 28, 2015, Gunn's brother Sean Gunn was cast in the film, along with Steve Agee, David Dastmalchian, Gail Bean, and Valentine Miele. On June 1, 2015, Gunn announced on his Twitter feed that David Del Rio, Stephen Blackehart, Josh Brener, and Rusty Schwimmer had joined the cast. On June 2, 2015, Gunn announced on his Facebook page that Joe Fria, Benjamin Byron Davis, James Earl, Brent Sexton, and Mikaela Hoover were also cast.
